Solid player for the price
All in all I am very pleased with this unit. The main reason I got this one was because I had ordered a previous model Panasonic DVD player which has been superb but is discontinued now. This one seemed like a logical successor and really for DVD playback it's great. The upscaling looks nice (HDMI output too) and it fast to load and play and has given me no problems. My only disappointment is that it does not support DIVX (or any other VCD/Computer video formats that I can tell). I really wanted to be able to playback videos from my computer home movies stuff from friends whatever. The first Panasonic unit I got plays pretty much anything I throw in it while this one is focused on factory DVDs. So if you need a good solid long lasting DVD/Audio CD/MP3 player this is the unit for you especially for the price. If you are looking for something that supports a wide range of other codecs and formats you will want to keep looking. Panasonic makes some that do that wonderfully just not this one.

Does not have Viera Cast capability
Just wanted to warn others that despite the product description this unit does NOT have any Viera Cast connectivity options (wired or wireless). For the price I'm not surprised -- and I needed a new DVD player so I figured it would be a bonus if true. Other than that it seems solid. I've only had it a day the 1080p upscaling looks good and the remote is a little awkward.

Lots o' features very stylish
I've had this unit for a few days now and so far it has done everything as advertised. The DivX playback via USB is very impressive: no stuttering and very high quality. One caveat that I would like to point out: this unit does NOT play WMV files. I saw that WMA was listed and hoped that it would support WMV as well but no such luck. Other than that I've been pleased with it thus far.

Does the primary job great - others rough around the edges
I bought this one on a whim just to try out the extended detail enhancement feature. Of the three (Sharp Color Contrast) Sharp worked very well. I have a properly calibrated set so the other two were pretty much of no use. On newer films Sharp added just the right amount of sharpness to scenes without additional halos or other edge enhancement artifacts (the better the film's cinematography the better it works). With older 4:3 aspect films or non-HD TV shows from the 90s the image is stretch and there is nothing I can do to fix it. My Vizio TV can't adjust for it (it just sees a 1080P image coming from the player and keeps it in its "normal" state - stretched in other words) and neither can the player. That's pretty frustrating and I may end up sending this back for that reason. Need to take stock of how many DVDs I rent that are 4:3. The audio is good/average. Nothing to write home about but perfectly acceptable. The build quality of the unit is very light. The case of the player feels like a tin can and the remote is as tiny and lightweight as a child's toy. The buttons are very small and unintuitive.
Again for what its basic purpose is (DVD upscaled playback) it does a great job on 16:9 widescreen material particularly with Sharp enabled. The image quality rivals at times the Oppo DV-980H (no joke) and is slightly better than the Pioneer Elite DV-49AV. I wished Toshiba had chosen to put the XDE feature into a more quality player from a feature and build standpoint. It would have a real winner then - even at another say $50 for that quality.
Edit: Well after a week or so of ownership I feel I was a bit too harsh on the XDE-600 so I bumped the rating up to four stars. The image quality is so good for the low price that I can overlook the deficiencies. Plus I found a work-around of sorts for the 4:3 aspect problem. Set the HDMI resolution to 480p in the player and it will display in the proper aspect ratio on the TV. The only snag is that the XDE settings won't work in anything but 1080p but since they are mostly older movies (that use that format) I can live with it.

Best yet in the price range
We originally tried the Samsung DVD-1080P9 after moving up from an old 480i Sony but the 9P had trouble reading some of the more scratched up DVDs. Also the Sony would remember your last play spot for the last 6 DVDs that you played which the Samsung didn't. Not quite satisfied with the Samsung we decided to try out the Pioneer DV-420V-K and after one night of fiddling we're returning the Samsung.
As other's have said it has all the important remote buttons on the face of the player it has a high quality video output and I have had no problems yet reading scratched up DVDs. As a bonus it remembers at least the last two DVD's play spots which is very handy if you have kids and want to swap out parent's material for the kidstuff. I also like the setup menu and manual better on the Pioneer.
Highly recommended.

Great for the price! SD reader is VERY handy!
This is a surprisingly good DVD player. It plays both pre-recorded and home DVDs very well. Picture quality is very good.
Features that I couldn't find on much more expensive players---like USB and SD readers---these save a LOT of time and effort.
Well worth the money!

Misleading
This is NOT a special multi-region version of the Philips DVP5990--it simply IS the DVP5990 with printed instructions for making it region-free by punching numbers into the remote. These instructions are available for free on the Web and in the Amazon review for the Philips DVP5090 so there's no need to pay a premium for this "special" DVP5090. The advertising is very misleading and Amazon should stop selling this as a unique version of the DVP5990.

Beautiful picture and sound quality on my HDTV
This DVD player does an excellent job of upconverting in my opinion. I also have a far more expensive Oppo DVD player and I would say they are on par.
One 'feature' I dislike about these DVD players is in the manufacturer's quest to make the box look sleek and simple there are only a couple of buttons: open/close play and stop (aside from the power button). Why oh why do manufacturers not put skip or fast-forward buttons on the box? Is this to force us to buy new remote controls when the kids make them disappear? I just don't like the idea that a piece of equipment become less functional without the sometimes elusive remote control.
Still it does provide a beautiful picture very sharp and one I believe almost maximizes the contrast color and clarity provided by our expensive plasma tv.
A very good value when considering the quality for the price point.
